Butler is a family-oriented community that was built on industry. As production industries have deteriorated, so has the ability to maintain some of the city's facilities that once flourished. The S.O.S. Team was developed to raise funds for the revitalization of the Memorial Park Pool. The children from the neighborhood school, Broad Street Elementary, as well as the teachers and other community members have been involved in raising money for this renovation. The pool has been unusable for the past three summers because of its need for an upgrade. This community would like to see their pool open so that it will be a safe environment for city kids and their families. Another goal includes the children learning the importance of community service. This project will impact the 15,000 residents of the City of Butler, especially the children of the West End section of the city. The school has been participating in fundraising efforts since May 2007. We have raised $7,395. The total needed for the project is $199,000. As you can see, we are far from our goal, but we have succeeded in spreading community awareness. We would like to have the pool open for the summer of 2009, so if we are chosen to receive this grant, the money would help us to reopen the pool by that time. Our request may not be unique, but it is always special when a group of citizens, including children, are committed to enhancing their community and bringing pride to their neighborhood.
