The person you might not have been counting on can turn out to be the real deal. This is the one who decides how she can help you and then just does it. She climbs over her fears and yours, and just shows up. One individual's selfless act of coming to your side without your having to ask creates an unexpected space for you to get a sense for how you feel.
If you have just one friend like that, you are lucky an you have a lifesaver. If you have several friends like that, you have a lifeboat.
